College of Art is an Institution established in 1942 for advanced training in Visual Art, creative and applied, leading to the Bachelor of Fine Art Course of four years duration in disciplines of Painting, Sculpture and Applied Art at the Undergraduate Level and the Postgraduate course of Master in Fine Art in the above mentioned disciplines of two years duration.
The emphasis is on practical studio work, study of prescribed theory subjects and research in selected fields.
The Faculty are practicing artists painters, sculptors and graphic designers of national, international repute, and also a selected group of visiting Faculty who enrich the teaching programmes with their expertise, thus providing the students with the opportunity of discussion and interaction with eminent and contemporary artists, designers and entrepreneurs.
Our endeavour to differentiate between education where one learns how to make a living and a form of education that teaches one how to live is highlighted in the ANNUAL ART EXHIBITION of the College where one witnesses the mature amalgamation of this view in either a Painting or a Sculpture or in an Advt. Campaign. Moreover, one also experiences the contemporary, as well as, the traditional, not only in the practical aspects of Fine Art but also in Dance, Drama and Music Performed by the students in the cultural events during the period of Exhibition. Thus the Annual Art Exhibition of the College is an important academic event in the capital which the art lovers, parents and students, alumni and the public in general very eagerly look forward to.
Art Education stalwarts such as Mr. Ramendranath Chakravarty, Padma Bhushan Prof.B.C.Sanyal, Prof.Biswanath Mukherjee, Prof.O.P.Sharma, have since its inception, headed and nurtured this prestigious institution. The College has also had the good fortune to associate, over the years, with educationists and eminent artists such as Mr. Sailoz Mukherjee, Prof. K.S.Kulkarni, Mr. G.R.Santosh, Mr. Bimal Das Gupta, Mr. Dhanraj Bhagat, Ms. Jaya Appaswamy, Prof. Dinkar Kowshik, Mr. Somnath Hore, Mr. Biren De, Padma Vibhushan Dr. Satish Gujral, Mr. Amarnath Sehgal, Prof. P.D.Abhayankar, Prof. P.N.Mago, Prof. S.S.Vohra, Prof. N.C.Sen Gupta, Prof. Jagmohan Chopra, Prof. Paramjeet Singh. And, to mention a few names from the so vast an Alumni such as Mr. Manjit Bawa, Mr. Sidharth Sen, Mr. Niloy Sen, Mr. Pradip Sircar, Mr. E.J.Enas, Mr. Neeraj Goswami, Mr. Subha Ghosh. Besides, the present Faculty also includes from the Alumni such members as Prof. Jai Zharotia, Ms. Anupam Sud, Mr. Krishan Ahuja, Ms. Kanchan Chander, Mr. Kanwar Singh Pawar, Mr. Rabi Shankar Dey, Dr. B.S.Chauhan, Ms. Sangeeta Kaushik, Mr. Manoj Kumar, Mr. Pardeep Kumar, Mr. R.K.Panwar, Ms. Archana Sharma and Mr. Mohan Singh.
Those who graduate may become freelance artists, designers and visualizers or they would be qualified from employment in Advertising Agencies, Publishing Houses, Governement or Private Establishments, Teachers or Administrators or Art Programmes besides the employment avenue in Information Technology.
